Carl LeVan is Professor in the School of International Service at American University, where he is the current faculty president and former chair of Comparative and Regional Studies. His research focuses on political institutions, democratization, and governance. His latest book is Contemporary Nigerian Politics: Competition in a Time of Transition and Terror (2019). He is the co-editor of three books, including The Oxford Handbook of Nigerian Politics (with Patrick Ukata). His 2017 co-authored book, Constituents before Assembly: Participation, Deliberation and Representation in the Crafting of New Constitutions, demonstrates that public participation in constitution-making has positive long-term benefits for democracy. His project explores the problem of truth in American democracy.
