Call for papers for the panel “West African Islamic Theology: Discourses and Developments to the Early 20th Century”, which will be held at the 8th Annual European Academy of Religion (EuARe) Conference in Vienna, 8–12 July 2025.
This panel seeks to explore the landscape of Islamic theology in West Africa, examining the scholarly debates, social contexts, and intellectual contributions that have shaped theological traditions in the region. Taking a broad definition of theology, the panel would welcome paper proposals on themes including but not limited to:
– Theological responses to intellectual, political, and social challenges;
– Intersections of Sufism and kalām in West African Islamic thought;
– Parameters and premises of theological debates in the region.
