Ishmael N. Annang is an assistant professor of history at Mount Holyoke College and an historian of society and environment in Africa and the African Atlantic. His current book project, Growing Food, Eating Medicine, celebrates the creative rituals of health and healing performed collaboratively by Africans and African spirit beings in their efforts to address food insecurity and sociopolitical violence in the Gold Coast (now Ghana) during the Columbian Exchange. Part of this project has appeared in the Journal of West African History.
