Rafael Cunha de Almeida is a history teacher from Brazil with a Ph.D. in Public Policy. He served in South Sudan during the 2013–2014 security crisis, working with the United Nations on humanitarian efforts and the Protection of Civilians. A former Brazilian Army officer, he was also the Chief Instructor for the Political and Strategy Course for both international and high-ranking Brazilian officers at ECEME (Escola de Comando e Estado-Maior do Exército – Brazilian Army War College).

He studied and lived in China while completing a master’s degree at the National Defense University, followed by a doctoral degree in Public Policy in Brazil. In both programs, his research focused on the protection of civilians by the UN in South Sudan, exploring the region’s history and its connections to war, religion, and slavery.

In 2011, he volunteered during archaeological excavations at the slave cemetery of the Instituto dos Pretos Novos (IPN) in Rio de Janeiro. He has since contributed to various short courses and lectures on African history, the history of slavery in Africa, and the history of Nilotic Sub-Saharan Africa.
