History in Africa invites expressions of interest for historians to join the Editorial Review Board. The Editorial Collective is committed to inclusivity and diversity. We are seeking to appoint two sets of new ERB members, each for three year terms, commencing May 2025 and January 2026.

The HiA is an international, peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes original research and review essays on methodological and historiographical matters growing out of the histories of Africa and its diasporas. It has been at the forefront of critical discussion of these topics for more than four decades.

Ideal candidates should be published scholars of history, either tenured professors or lecturers with workplace security, comfortable reading and engaging with scholarship beyond their areas and regions of expertise. Bilingual candidates are particularly welcome. Editors should have a working command of scholarly English; a familiarity with French modes of scholarship would be a significant asset. Applicants may reside in any part of the world.

The position of ERB Member is entirely voluntary and comes with no remuneration. Current ERB members incorporate the position within their annual plans-of-work at their home institutions.

In consultation with the Editor in Chief and Managing Editor, the chief responsibilities of the ERB are:

–                Acting as an ambassador for the journal including encouraging submissions from within your networks and publicizing published content;
–                Reviewing and providing reader reports for a minimum of one submission annually
–                Identifying and recruiting an appropriate reviewer for articles you are unable to review;
–                Serving on at least one subcommittee
–                Attending biannual ERB meetings virtually and in person at the ASA Annual Meeting; and
–                Providing advice and comments to the editors as requested and on an ad hoc basis.

Expressions of interest in the form a single-page letter and complete curriculum vitae should be sent by email to Nikki Parsons (managingeditor@historyinafrica.org) copying the ASA Executive Director (asaed@africanstudies.org) with the subject “HiA ERB Member Application,” no later than Monday, March 31, 2025. Review of applications will commence April 1, 2025.
