ESN Mentorship and Peer Working Group Initiatives

The Emerging Scholars Network is excited to launch two new projects in 2025 in response to member requests for greater mentorship and networking opportunities!

Mentorship Program
The ESN Mentorship Program will pair emerging scholars with a senior scholar for a 6-month program (March-May & August-October) designed for graduate students and early-career scholars dedicated to advancing their research, writing, and professional development. Because we have limited spots available, we seek candidates committed to regular participation and tangible progress. To assist our selection process, please complete the Mentee Application by February 23rd and answer all questions thoroughly. Scholars who wish to serve as a Mentor can register here.

The program begins with a virtual orientation for all participants, followed by one-on-one monthly check-ins with your mentor focused on each mentee’s specific goals. Finally, mentors and mentees will be able to meet in-person at the ASA Annual Meeting Nov. 20-22, 2025 in Atlanta, GA.

This mentorship opportunity fosters community, accelerates scholarly work, and provides invaluable support at a critical stage in one’s academic journey. Both mentors and mentees benefit from a collaborative environment that encourages goal-setting, resource sharing, and personalized feedback that advances the field of African Studies.

Virtual Peer Working Group Program
ESN is also excited to launch the Peer Working Group Program! This initiative is designed to connect emerging scholars—especially those who may feel isolated in their institutions—with structured peer support and professional development opportunities.

Through interest-based groups, participants will gain mentorship, accountability, and collaboration with fellow scholars across disciplines and geographic locations. Whether you’re looking for writing support, feedback on your research, structured reading discussions, or career guidance, this program is designed to help you thrive.

What Are the Working Groups?

Each working group will have 8–12 members, co-led by two volunteer organizers, and supported by an ESN Executive Committee (EC) member. All groups will meet virtually on Zoom. Groups will be created from the following options based on interest:
