Digital Colonization or Digital Liberation? AI, Health, and the Future of African Health Systems
This webinar convenes scholars across Science and Technology Studies (STS), the history of medicine, medical anthropology, Computer and AI science, and literary and cultural studies to examine the political, epistemological, historical, cultural, and ethical dimensions of AI and mobile health (mHealth) deployment in Africa. Its central question, whether digital health technology in African contexts operates as a new form of colonial extraction or as a genuine instrument of liberation, is one that no single discipline within Health, Science, Media, and Technology (HSMT) can answer alone, and one whose urgency makes interdisciplinary collaboration not merely intellectually desirable but ethically necessary.
