The current base salary range for this position is $81,633 – $159,014. “Off-scale” salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published systemwide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Center for African Studies Mission Statement:
Established in 1979, the Center for African Studies (CAS) is the principal unit for research and scholarship engaged with Africa and Africa-related activities at the University of California, Berkeley. CAS facilitates interdisciplinary research, teaching, learning and exchange with the aim to deepen understanding of diverse and dynamic African experiences and their contexts to contribute to a robust and nuanced knowledge of Africa and its global significance. The Center attracts students and scholars from around the world in disciplines ranging from the humanities and social sciences to public health and conservation biology to business and engineering, bridging boundaries and forging new approaches to current scholarship, policy and practice.
Position Description:
In consultation with the Director, the Associate Director develops and implements programs to advance the CAS mission engaging faculty, international scholars, students and external stakeholders in pursuit of this mission. The Associate Director initiates and manages research programs, fellowship programs, and collaborations with partners inside and outside of the university. The Associate Director also leads daily operations and administration of the unit, formally supervises all unit staff, and manages long-term planning to ensure programmatic success. To achieve this, the Associate Director communicates with potential collaborators, manages existing program resources, identifies new resources, and implements program activities. The Associate Director advises the Director in setting program priorities, in policy and decision making, and in collaborating with other units on and off campus.
Responsibilities Include:
Develop programming in collaboration with the CAS Director, staff and interested faculty and graduate students
Work with students and faculty on developing research proposals and works closely with students, both graduate and undergraduate, on their research projects
Manage Fellowships and awards such as Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, the Rocca and Ezera dissertation research awards, the Geist and Rosberg undergraduate research awards, the Undergraduate Thesis Award; Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowships, the Mastercard Foundation Faculty Seed Grant, etc
Collaborate with the Department of African American Studies to support the African Language Program
Advising current and prospective students and alumni on academics, well-being, careers, and further studies
Oversees workshops, curriculum, events in collaboration with a variety of entities
Grant writing, management and reporting
Fundraising and donor relations

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Advanced degree or equivalent international degree
Preferred qualifications
- PhD or equivalent degree in a African Studies-related field
- Competence in one or more of the major languages of the region, together with field experience.
- Familiar with educational institutions, entrepreneurship, and job markets across multiple African contexts
- Familiar with African Studies as a field, with the methods and tools of contemporary scholarly research and analysis, with a wide range of disciplinary approaches, and with current trends in different fields
- Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in a diverse academic environment
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong grant writing and fund-raising skills
- Strong interpersonal, communication skills
- Strong administrative skills
- The successful applicant must be flexible and adaptable in managing time and juggling many varied responsibilities
