This panel will explore the role of transdisciplinarity in education in and about Africa from a variety of perspectives. Knowledge about Africa is often separated into different spheres – for example along disciplinary boundaries, or distinguishing indigenous knowledge from science. This panel will approach knowledge through a transdisciplinary lens, exploring past, present, and future attempts to integrate knowledge across existing boundaries in education. Examples might include approaches to (re)integrating “traditional” and academic knowledge in education; transdisciplinary pedagogy as a means of incorporating knowledge about and perspectives from Africa into more courses and classrooms; trandisciplinarity in the teaching of African Studies today; transdisciplinarity in higher education in Africa; or more. Papers might range from informal education in the home to formal academic education, and from the past to the present.
Please send abstracts of no more than 250 words to Kathleen Vongsathorn (kvongsa@siue.edu) by March 20th.
