West African societies were incredibly dynamic particularly from the eighteenth century onwards. In examining the role of the environmental in shaping the outcomes of conflicts, the writings of a nineteenth century Afro-Danish Basil Mission pastor and the formation of an internal West African diaspora in the 19th century all promises to open new frontiers in West African historical thinking. All papers foreground an African perspective, seeking new ways of interpreting conflict, the African environment and the agency that these West African actors played in shaping their own histories.
