Social change initiatives abound in the Democratic Republic of the Congo despite the overarching narrative of a nation at war and overcome by systemic poverty. Development solutions have created livelihoods and paths to economic sustainability which speak to the agency and persistence of the Congo people. The panel speaks to the ASA conference theme of “African Possibilities in a Shifting World” through case studies of initiatives that aim to transform access to health, education and economic opportunity by harnessing expertise, resources, and strategic partnerships to advance life outcomes in rural and urban settings in the Congo. The panel presents case studies on – 1) multi-sectoral rural development that builds self-reliance through education and innovative technologies; 2) harnessing research to improve access to contraception as a core national development imperative; and 3) and other topics ranging from diaspora-led innovations in development and international economic cooperation. These examples contribute to a narrative of innovation, solidarity, and intentional development which create pathways to sustainable development for the Congolese people. These initiatives also complement development efforts as articulated in the 2024-2028 Program of Priority Actions, implemented by the DRC Ministry of Planning and Coordination of Development Support. In particular, the case studies fall under the sub-sections titled: 1) Promotion of Diversification of the Economy ; 2) Research and innovation in Priority Sectors (agriculture, health, etc.); 3) Participation of the Diaspora in Research and Innovation Initiatives of DRC; and 4) Capacity Building in Local Development.
