by Ava Hess, on behalf of the Arts Council of the African Arts Association

This summer, I had the privilege of traveling to Accra, Ghana for the 17th Triennial Symposium on African Art. As it would turn out, my first time participating in an Arts Council of the African Studies Association (ACASA) conference would coincide with a truly historic moment for the association: its first meeting on the African continent.

Celebrating 60 Years of the ASA!

2017 marks the 60th anniversary of the African Studies Association, and as many of our members know, the ASA has celebrated all year with our 60th Anniversary Campaign. The ASA Board of Directors reflected on the past 60 years of the association, and identified key strategic initiatives critical to the ASA’s mission that they asked ASA members to support. You can learn more about the past 60 years of the ASA, and the initiatives for the future in this video.

Beyond Panels: Film Screenings at the ASA Annual Meeting

The 60th Annual Meeting will feature two film screenings and a selection of films available for on-demand viewing in video booths in the Exhibit Hall. Organized by African Studies Review Film Review Editor Kenneth Harrow, the film screenings add a dynamic aspect to the Annual Meeting by bringing films that may not be easily accessible in the United States to conference attendees. Post screening, Annual Meeting attendees are given the rare opportunity to ask questions of filmmakers and film subjects.

Connect at #ASA2017

The 60th Annual Meeting of the ASA is only a few days away, and the ASA has created several ways for attendees to connect with each other, and the larger African Studies community, over the conference. From the Executive Director

Dear ASA Community,

The ASA Secretariat staff and I have just arrived onsite for the 60th Annual Meeting of the ASA at the Marriott Magnificent Mile in Chicago. The hotel is abuzz with other groups who will soon be closing down their meetings to clear out the more than 40 meeting rooms that will be the venue of our Association for next 5 days. There is always so much anticipation in the air as we await the almost 2,000 delegates that we will be part of this year’s meeting.
