Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Belonging (Associate/Full Professor, tenure or non-tenure track)

The Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Belonging will provide institutional leadership for and oversight of strategic initiatives to support and grow a culture committed to promoting equity, community partnerships, and a social justice agenda throughout NYU Steinhardt and beyond it. This position will serve as the primary point of contact on issues of equity and belonging within the School, working with appropriate stakeholders from students, faculty, administrators, and staff.

The ideal candidate will have a strong history of academic leadership and scholarly productivity in research or creative work related to equity, belonging, and social justice, with a demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with a variety of constituent groups, both inside and outside the University. This is a half-time administrative appointment for a Steinhardt faculty member who will conduct research, teach, and advise students in their home department.

Primary Accountabilities

Develop and sustain a high-quality infrastructure to support school-wide equity and social justice initiatives. Chair and develop the NYU Steinhardt Council on matters of diversity, equity, and belonging. Oversee and grow the work of existing pipeline programs, including Faculty First Look and student/admissions initiatives. Partner with and support Steinhardt’s research centers and institutes, providing leadership in advancing equity, belonging, and community action focus.

Collaborate with the Vice Deans for Faculty Affairs, Academic Affairs, and Research, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, and the Executive Director of Human Resources to enhance the school’s support for diversity and equity training, mentoring and development of faculty and instructors, students, administrators, and staff. Collaborate with these constituents to create and sustain a climate and culture of social justice and equity that permeates all aspects of the school’s work, including but not limited to, its curricula, recruitment and hiring practices, promotion and tenure, and retention initiatives.

Coordinate with NYU administrative offices devoted to equity initiatives, best practices, and assessments to track the success of NYU Steinhardt’s endeavors. Serve as NYU Steinhardt’s chief equity officer. Work with University leadership to identify and implement school-level recommendations from the [email protected] Assessment.

Identify opportunities for extramural funding to support equity-related projects.

Build partnerships and relationships with community organizations and individuals with the goal of sharing NYU Steinhardt’s research, creativity, and practice expertise, to influence practice and policy, and to learn and implement model practices from community leaders and ground-level stakeholders.

The successful applicant will have an earned doctorate in education, allied health professions, performing arts, sociology, history, cultural studies, law, or a related field, along with a minimum of ten (10) years of combined experience in teaching and administrative work at the graduate and/or undergraduate level in a large academic institution. Candidates should be tenured (associate or full professor) or clinical (associate or full) faculty. A strong record of publication and evidence of a systematic research agenda; creative performance, and/or experience with innovative program design and development with respect to issues of diversity, equity, and belonging, and potential for success in securing external funding are required.
