The Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University (NYU) seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor in pre-colonial Africa for academic year 2021-2022, with a possibility of extending it for a second year. The position is open to a range of disciplinary approaches and geographies, and the successful candidate would teach 2 courses per semester and may be assigned a few undergraduate student advisees to mentor. Gallatin welcomes proposals for courses that examine social and economic relations, political and linguistic traditions, migration, faith systems, art and material culture, ecological relations, orality and the archive, and early exchanges with Arabs, Asians and European peoples. We seek applications from scholars in the humanities and social sciences who reach across disciplinary boundaries in research and teaching. Potential disciplines include religious studies, history, archaeology, anthropology, and philosophy.
Founded in 1972, NYU Gallatin is a liberal arts college of 1,500 undergraduate students and 200 master’s students that is a part of New York University. Ph.D. in hand by time of appointment; demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college or university level; and a strong record of research and writing.
