Assistant Professor in Black Canadian History at the University of Guelph
The Department of History at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Black Canadian History. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2022.
The position will have History as their home department, and their responsibilities will be split evenly between History and the Black Canadian Studies Minor, a new program is launching in Fall 2022. Responsibilities include maintaining robust research and publishing agenda, teaching undergraduate and graduate students in core Black Studies and History courses and in their own areas of research, and service work in History and Black Canadian Studies.
Candidates must hold a PhD in History, or be close to completing their dissertation work. Applicants who have not yet completed their dissertation should indicate in their cover letter how close they are to completion and ask their referees to comment on this in their letters. The preferred candidate will have a specialization in Black Canadian History and/or Black History. The preferred candidate will ideally have a PhD in History, Black Studies, or a related field at the time of appointment, a record of excellence in research and teaching as well as the potential to attract graduate students. The committee will consider applicants whose dissertation work is nearing completion. Applicants who have not yet completed their dissertation should indicate in their cover letter how close they are to completion and ask their referees to comment on this in their letters.
The successful candidate will provide leadership in the teaching of the core of the new Black Canadian Studies Minor and must be able to teach Black Canadian History (BLCK*2000). They will also be expected to teach courses in the Department of History. Applicants with the ability to teach history courses on themes and geographic areas connected to Canadian history, such as Black United States history, Black diasporic history, history of the Black Atlantic world, or Caribbean history, are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates are encouraged to include a short discussion of their teaching background and experience and how they envision teaching a Black Canadian History course in their cover letter.
