Vassar College is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer, and applications from members of historically underrepresented groups are especially encouraged.

Position Summary and Responsibilities
The Africana Studies Program at Vassar College invites applications for a full-time, three year renewable Lecturer to teach Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) language beginning in Fall 2019. Vassar College is an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer with a strong commitment to increasing the diversity of the campus community and the curriculum, and promoting an environment of equality, inclusion, and respect for difference. Candidates who can contribute to this goal through their teaching, research, advising, and other activities are encouraged to identify their strengths and experiences in this area. Individuals from groups whose underrepresentation in the American professoriate has been severe and longstanding are particularly encouraged to apply.

The candidate will contribute to the Arabic Language and Culture correlate (minor) within Africana Studies, which emphasizes the Afro-Arab World, particularly North and Sub-Saharan Africa. The successful candidate will teach five language courses at all levels of Arabic (introductory to advance) per academic year, coordinate “drill” and conversation sessions and other language intensive activities, contribute collaboratively to the planning of the Arabic curriculum, perform program service and advise students.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements include a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Arabic language and/or literature, language pedagogy, applied linguistics, or in a related field; extensive experience in the latest developments in Arabic language pedagogy, curriculum design, and material development; substantial classroom experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching Arabic as a foreign language (MSA) at the college level; native or near-native proficiency in MSA and English. Proficiency in, and experience teaching, at least one regional dialect is preferred.

Vassar is a highly selective, coeducational liberal arts college of about 2450 undergraduates (no graduate students) located in the beautiful and historic Hudson Valley seventy-five miles north of New York City.
