Position Summary and Responsibilities
The Africana Studies Program at Vassar College invites applications for a full-time, three year renewable Lecturer to teach Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) language beginning in Fall 2019. The candidate will contribute to the Arabic Language and Culture correlate (minor) within Africana Studies, which emphasizes the Afro-Arab World, particularly North and Sub-Saharan Africa. The successful candidate will teach five language courses at all levels of Arabic (introductory to advance) per academic year, coordinate “drill” and conversation sessions and other language intensive activities, contribute collaboratively to the planning of the Arabic curriculum, perform program service and advise students.
Minimum requirements include a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Arabic language and/or literature, language pedagogy, applied linguistics, or in a related field; extensive experience in the latest developments in Arabic language pedagogy, curriculum design, and material development; substantial classroom experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching Arabic as a foreign language (MSA) at the college level; native or near-native proficiency in MSA and English. Proficiency in, and experience teaching, at least one regional dialect is preferred.
