The Department of History at Connecticut College invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor position in African History to begin July 1, 2022. All-time periods and thematic approaches to sub-Saharan African history are welcome. We especially seek experts in African history who incorporate African languages in their research. We are interested in scholars whose research and/or teaching explores some of the following topics: Black radical social and political movements, African indigeneity, gender and sexuality, health and medicine, human rights, and environmental and economic injustice, and transnational connections. A successful candidate will be able to guide students who are interested in looking at this field from perspectives that center on the scholarship and experiences of Africans and include indigenous sources.
At Connecticut College, Africana Studies is an interdisciplinary program that critically and systematically examines the cultures, histories, and experiences of people of African heritage globally. Drawing from a wide variety of courses in the humanities, social sciences, and arts, majors in Africana Studies undertake intellectually rigorous research, writing, and analysis of peoples of African descent and engage scholarship in activism and lived experiences. History would expect a new hire in African History to continue the tradition of contributing to Africana Studies.
We seek a colleague who is an excellent teacher and is enthusiastic about working closely with students in a liberal arts context. At the time of official appointment, candidates must have a Ph.D. in African History. Successful candidates will be able to teach courses on pre-colonial, colonial, and modern African history. After a first year of teaching 2-2, professors teach 3-2 (5 courses total over the academic year). Salary is competitive.
