While the formal call for papers and panels has closed, there is still the opportunity to submit proposals under the AfricaNow! and Flash formats.

AfricaNow! The African Studies Association (ASA) is excited to continue our AfricaNow! format, in response to the need to accommodate emerging issues on our program. These sessions will feature content that focuses on late-breaking issues that emerged subsequent to the close of the ASA CFP on March 15, 2017. The sessions can be proposed as group discussions (with no more than five presenters), individual presentations, or memorials.

Please ensure that your AfricaNow! session submission meets the following criteria:

  • The topic must relate directly to current events that involve Africa, as well as the Annual Meeting’s theme.
  • The presentation’s content must focus on issues that arose after the close of submissions on March 15, 2017.
  • All AfricaNow! organizers and presenters must register for the Annual Meeting when notified of acceptance.

An online form is available here and on the ASA website to submit proposals for AfricaNow! Proposals must be received no later than close of business, 5pm EST, on Friday, September 29.  All AfricaNow! sessions will take place on Thursday, November 16; Friday, November 17; and on Saturday, November 18, from 8:30am-6pm.

You will be asked to submit a basic title, an abstract that describes the session and confirms its timeliness, the format, the names and affiliations of each presenter, the start time, and the duration of the session. You preferred time slot will be made available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Please note that these sessions will not be peer-reviewed and submissions of formal panels and papers will not be accepted in this format. The participation rules do not apply to the AfricaNow! sessions. Presenters who are already on the program may submit proposals. Abstracts that were already submitted prior to the submission deadline cannot be resubmitted for AfricaNow! consideration. All requests for sessions will be reviewed by the ASA Secretariat for general appropriateness. Additional time slots in the room will be held for last-minute issues that arise in the days leading up to the meeting. The AfricaNow! room will be equipped with theatre style seating, a head table, and a video projector.

Flash The ASA is pleased to introduce Flash presentations at the 2017 annual meeting. These presentations are a rapid-fire, engaging performance of 15 image-rich slides. Each slide shows for exactly 20 seconds before automatically moving to the next slide. The total presentation time is a speedy 5 minutes. They are poetry delivered with a punch. When reviewing your abstracts, we look for the visual and verbal promise to surprise, provoke, evoke or simply take a stand. All submissions are blind-reviewed for originality, passion, point of view and relevance to the 2017 conference theme. An abstract of up to 250 words that briefly describes your overall concept as well as how your visual and verbal narratives will unfold must be provided. Include 5 images that you intend (and have the right permissions) to use in your presentation. Do not include any references to the author’s identity (to facilitate blind peer review). All materials must be included in a single PDF or Word document. Do not submit additional files.

An online form is available here and on the ASA website to submit Flash proposals. Proposals must be received no later than close of business, 5pm EST, on Friday, September 29.

We thank you for your AfricaNow! and Flash submissions.
