Assistant Professor of African History

The Department of History at Mount Holyoke College invites applications for a tenure-track position in African history to begin July 1, 2025. All geographic regions will be considered, but preference will be given to West, Central, East, and Southern Africa. Areas of specialization may include histories of medicine and disease; science and technology; labor and migration; religion and belief systems; governance, authority, and political participation; gender and sexuality; environmental history; visual and material culture; slavery, race, and inequality; education and knowledge production. The successful candidate will teach a course centered on Africa before the slave trade and additional courses from the introductory to advanced undergraduate level. The teaching expectation is 2/2. PhD or ABD required.

Please submit a letter of application, C.V., and statements covering (1) research interests, (2) teaching philosophy, (3) the mentoring of a diverse student body. Graduate transcripts, sample syllabuses of an introductory course in African history and a course in your field of specialization, and a short writing sample is also required. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.
