Assistant or Associate Professor of African Studies
The Department of African, African American, and Diaspora Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks to hire an Africanist with training in geography, political science, history, and/or cultural studies. A scholar whose work and teaching interface with Central Africa, Southern Africa, and/or the Atlantic world—broadly conceived—could facilitate transoceanic and cross-continental curricular development and intellectual clusters in the Department. Moreover, candidates whose scholarship engages the environment, Pan-African thought, and/or Black queer and transgender studies would enrich the cross-disciplinary work of the Department. We are especially interested in scholars whose work frustrates the colonial mapping of the African continent and transcends the geopolitical and linguistic boundaries imposed in the aftermath of the Berlin Conference of 1884.
The Department of African, African American, and Diaspora Studies is a transnational program that emphasizes the histories, cultures, cultural linkages, and contemporary sociopolitical and economic realities of Africa and the African Diasporas in the context of a globalizing world. We approach these areas of study from multiple perspectives, and as an interdisciplinary program, our faculty are trained in the fields of anthropology, film, history, international development studies, linguistics, literature, music, and political science. The department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration either in African Studies or African American and Diaspora Studies. We also offer several undergraduate minors, as well as language instruction in Swahili, Wolof, and Yoruba. In the fall of 2025, the Department will welcome its inaugural cohort of graduate students as it launches its PhD program in Africana Studies.
