ASA Summer Programs Support Assistant

The African Studies Association (ASA) Summer Programs Support Assistant is a part-time, temporary, fully remote position focusing primarily on Annual Meeting organization and special member requests. The position begins June 16, 2025 and concludes August 29, 2025 with the tentative option to extend up to 4 weeks. Hours will range from 15-20 hours per week. This position will report directly to the Executive Director and is an exciting opportunity to learn more about non-profit management and the function of scholarly societies in higher education.  

Responsibilities: 

  • Respond to member emails and questions regarding the Annual Meeting, AfricaNow! CFP, registration and membership, refunds, etc. 
  • Fulfill requests for letters of invitation following ASA’s standard procedures 
  • Provide membership and registration invoices and receipts upon member request 
  • Update and maintain ASA’s WordPress website as requested 
  • Track program participant registrations 
  • Assist with scheduling communications including Mailchimp emails, social media posts, and website posts 
  • Assist ASA members with online access and navigation of the ASA Membership Portal 
  • Assist with organization of ASA prizes 
  • Assist with program change requests 
  • Support Annual Meeting planning and execution for relevant programs 

Qualifications:   

  • Independent, self-starter  
  • Good judgement, commitment to honesty and transparency   
  • Exceptional communication skills and attention to detail  
  • Patience and willingness to help and support members 
  • Proficiency or willingness to learn WordPress, Slack, and Dropbox  
  • Experience with OpenWater or another conference management software preferred, but not required 
  • Experience with Adobe and Canva preferred, but not required 
  • Experience working with a senior staff member in a non-profit or educational setting  
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a humanities or social science field preferred, but not required 
  • African Studies specialization/background preferred, but not required 

Applicant must have a functional personal laptop and consistent access to internet.
