Bryan Kauma is an Assistant Professor of African History at Southwestern University. He obtained his PhD in History from Stellenbosch University. His research focuses on the food and environmental history of southern Africa, with attention to indigenous foods and crops. Broadly, his research interests explore the everyday social, cultural and environmental politics that shape African foodscapes and landscapes. As a teacher-scholar, his classes on modern African History engage with various themes including gender, race, and economic systems among Africa’s agrarian societies. He has also published in various peer-reviewed journals including Critical African Studies, Historia and South African Historical Journal as well as contributions in the Routledge Handbook for Environmental History as well as Routledge Handbook on the Economic History of Natural Resources. He is the Events Chair for the African Studies Association’s Emerging Scholars Network.
