We regret to inform the wider ASA community that Her Excellency, Hassana Alidou, transitioned peacefully on June 10, 2023. Please join us in celebrating her life in San Francisco at the ASA Annual Meeting.
Ambassador Hassana Alidou, twin sister to ASA Past President Ousseina Alidou, received her PhD in linguistics at the University of Illinois in 1997. She worked for the German Foundation for International Development consulting on the Basic Education Project in Niger, Mali, and Burkina and was senior education and literacy consultant for the Dutch Development Agency in Niger. She was a lecturer for UNICEF and The World Bank Education Specialists Institute of Development and was senior consultant and academic director of the German Foundation for International Development, as well as the Burkina Faso Ministry of Education focusing on bilingual education, literacy, and reading projects. Her passion was for promoting the early education of African students in their mother tongue rather than in French or English. From 2015 to 2018 she was appointed by President Mahamadou Issoufou as Ambassador (Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary) of the Republic of Niger to the United States and Canada. In this role she worked tirelessly in representing the interest and the people of Niger, striving to modernize the perception of Niger and Africa on the global stage.
