The 60th Annual Meeting of the ASA will feature many exciting sessions and events. The Program Committee, chaired by Marissa Moorman (Indiana University Bloomington) and Susanna Wing (Haverford College), have put together a fabulous program which includes more than 400 sessions and events across four days. Highlights from the program include:
The Current Issues Plenary, Thursday at 6:00PM, entitled “Victim-centered justice in Africa: the Hissène Habré Case and Beyond.” Featuring Reed Brody, Counsel, Human Rights Watch and Dokhot Clément Abaïfouta, President of the Association of Victims of Hissène Habré
Anne Pitcher’s Presidential Lecture, Friday at 7:00PM, entitled “ASA at 60: Advocacy in an age of Tyranny”
Three panels on Friday (see ASA meeting program for details) featuring the 13 Carnegie Corporation of New York scholars who are participating in this year’s Annual Meeting
Following up on the great success from last year, we will have a series of ASA Annual Meeting Podcasts, with interviews conducted by ASA members of key participants in this year’s meeting.
The closing gala and awards ceremony will be sponsored again this year by Royal Air Maroc and will feature a special celebration of the ASA’s 60th Birthday!
A special celebration to honor the outgoing editors of African Studies Review, Sean Redding (Amherst College) and Elliot Fratkin (Smith College) and to welcome the new ASR editorial team which will take place in the CUP press booth of the Exhibit Hall at 4:00pm on Thursday
This year’s Chicago Local Arrangements Committee has done a fabulous job of ensuring that meeting attendees will get a taste of Windy City culture. The opening reception will take place at the Chicago Cultural Center, a beautiful venue for the kick-off of this year’s meeting. The LAC has also organized a series of panel and pre-conference workshops to ensure that meeting participants will get a chance to explore in more detail Chicago’s connections with Africa.
As this year is the 60th of the ASA, we invite you to be part of celebrating this milestone of our organization by making a donation to the 60ht Anniversary Fund. Thanks to our partnership with Royal Air Maroc, who is also celebrating its 60th Birthday this year, those who donate onsite at this year’s Annual Meeting will be entered to win a drawing for two Roundtrip Tickets to any of Royal Air Maroc’s destinations in Africa.
Finally, for both those attending the meeting and those observing from afar, please be sure to follow this year’s meeting on social media with #ASA2017 and via the ASA Annual Meeting App: http://bit.ly/2yY4WN5
