As the ASA looks to its next 60 years, the Association hopes to expand the ASA Presidential Fellows program, with a goal of doubling the number of scholars based in African institutions that we are able to support to attend the Annual Meeting; increase funding available for initiatives of the Emerging Scholars Network; host or sponsor more conferences and events in Africa; expand ASA advocacy programs and events; and continue to support coordinate organizations through our small grants program.

Since the ASA Presidential Fellows program started in 2010 with one fellow, it has grown to include six fellows in 2017. In March 2017, the Association sent two ASA members to advocacy conferences and events in Washington, DC, and you can learn from their experiences here, and here. The ASA has again partnered with the American Anthropological Association to host a conference in Africa in the Summer of 2018, and this year the ASA awarded eight grants to support coordinate organization activities, such as conferences on the continent. If you want to see more of these initiatives and events, make sure to contribute to the 60th Anniversary Campaign Fund before the end of the year.

If you are attending the Annual Meeting in Chicago, there will be some exciting opportunities for you to support the 60th Anniversary Campaign. The ASA is partnering with Royal Air Maroc (RAM), which is also celebrating its 60th anniversary, to give anyone who donates to the 60th Anniversary Campaign at the Annual Meeting a chance to win a roundtrip ticket to a RAM destination in Africa. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $6 each, or 12 tickets for $60. Winners will be drawn at the Award Ceremony at the Annual Meeting, on Saturday, Nov. 18.

As we look to the end of 2017, we only have a few more weeks to reach our goal of $100,000. Nearly 200 ASA members have supported this campaign, helping us raise $22,440 – 20% of our goal. Current funds raised would allow for:

6 additional Presidential Fellows to attend the Annual Meeting

10 travel subsidies to be given for the next ASA conference in Africa

20 awards to ASA members to attend advocacy conferences in Washington, DC

40 small grants for coordinate organizations

Help the ASA achieve our goal of $100,000 to support the next 60 years of the Association. You can donate here, or by participating in our raffle at the Annual Meeting.
