Annual Meeting Registration Rates

The ASA’s Annual Meeting Registration system is outlined below. These rates are for in-person Annual Meetings. Virtual participation rates will be assessed ad hoc should the Association engage that format in the future.

Beginning in 2022, the ASA will only guarantee print programs for pre-registrants. This policy is just one step in our efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of the Annual Meeting.

Please Note: Membership is not required for pre-registration, however the cost of membership + member registration is lower than the cost of non-member registration. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the joint membership/annual meeting registration package. Become an ASA member through my ASA member portal.

*The ASA defines an Emerging Scholar as in pursuit of one’s terminal degree, or within five years post completion. International Emerging Scholars residing in the following countries are not eligible based on their designation as high income: United States, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

**The ASA defines a Sustaining Member as a membership which includes a $150 tax deductible donation within the membership fee for one year. As a thank you, the ASA offers a discounted registration and no onsite increase to Sustaining Members in their given membership year.

Credentialed working journalists and individuals with a diplomatic passport may submit a request for free Annual Meeting registration at members@africanstudies.org.

Refund Policy

Annual Meeting pre-registration fee refunds will only be processed for:
– an individual whose proposal has been declined, and only upon written request
– an individual whose proposal has been accepted, and had requested a letter of invitation from the ASA, but has been denied a visa; proof of the denial must be provided.

Requests for refunds should be sent to members@africanstudies.org, and will be refunded by the original method of payment. For checks, please include the mailing address.

If you are a presenter listed in the annual meeting program but cannot attend due to a visa or immigration issue, the ASA will ensure your ability to present your work through another presentation format (skype, video conference, or an onsite colleague who will present your work on your behalf).

Refunds for registration and/or membership will not be processed under any other circumstance.
