The Sahel, a vast swathe of semi-arid land stretching across Africa, grapples with a confluence of crises. Focusing on Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and potentially neighboring states, this panel delves into the complex interplay between shifting political alliances and threats of political violence.
Panelists will explore how regional and international partnerships are evolving, with traditional security arrangements fracturing and new collaborations emerging. Presentations will examine the consequences of these shifts on ongoing conflicts, including the roles of external actors.
The discussion will explore topics including but not limited to:
* Changing tactics of violent extremist groups and community-based armed groups
* Regional governance and cooperation
* The role of non-African states
* The role of Sahelian militaries in national politics
