Images of Africa

How do images of Africa reproduce, challenge, or re-envision problematic stereotypes and hegemonic narratives? In this panel, we hope to assemble scholars working on analysis of images of the continent in varying forms. Our own work is based on a visual analysis of images from three different middle school textbooks used in Georgia Public Schools. In this analysis, we demonstrate the impact of images to reinstantiate and cement harmful stereotypes about the continent. This panel invites scholars from a wide ranges of disciplines and perspectives who are working on images from textbooks, novels, film, social media, and beyond.
